GrapheneResearchers at the University Of Texas in Austin came up with a new material that helps solve the structure of graphite oxide and could provoke a cascade of other potential discoveries of the one-atom thick substance called graphene.

But first of all, what is this ‘graphene” ?

Graphene is a one-atom-thick planar sheet of sp2-bonded carbon atoms that are densely packed in a honeycomb crystal lattice. It can be viewed as an atomic-scale chicken wire made of carbon atoms and their bonds. Graphene is the strongest substance known to man, according to a study released in August 2008 by Columbia University. And that it because this bond between two atoms is the strongest bond in the nature. If we add the fact that it is lightweight, it is the best heat conductor and has charge carriers moving through it at a significant fraction of the speed of light, just imagine the applications this material could have in energy storage and production, transportation and nanoelectronics. The Violence Cycle

In: Brain & Behavior, Research Thursday Sep 25,2008

Violence We all know that parents should not argue in front of their children in order to provide them with a non-aggressive, non-violent environment. But why is that crucial for the child’s development ? Well, since decades ago, studies showed that children who grow up in aggressive or violent environments are more likely to become violent or aggressive in future relationships. But researchers were unable to establish the link between witnessing aggressive behavior as a child an taking that experience into practice as an adult. So far, we did not know what makes a child to deal with conflict in violent paths.

Researchers from Indiana University’s Department of Psychological and Brain Sciences think that it’s all in the way children process these information. It seems that children that have experienced or witnessed violence as a child process social information than those who grow up in “healthier” environments

“Children with high-conflict parents are more likely to think that aggressive responses would be good ways to handle social conflicts,” said John Bates, a professor of psychology in the Department of Psychological and Brain Sciences and a co-author of the study. ” Continue Reading…

Coal PlantWe all know that fossil fuels like coal, oil and gas rise the percentage of atmospheric carbon dioxide. But most of all don’t know by how much. Well, the burning of fossil fuels are accounted for 80 percent of the atmospheric carbon dioxide since the pre-industrial era.

To anticipate emissions from the burning fuel and to estimate how it will impact the climate can be done if we know how and when global oil production will peak. But scientists and analysts have debated over this problem in the past years and were unable to come up with a precise answer. But Pushker Kharecha and James Hansen of NASA’s Goddard Institute for Space Studies in New York have considered a wide range of fossil fuel consumption scenarios. Published Aug. 5 in the American Geophysical Union’s Global Biogeochemical Cycles, their research showed that the increasing percentage of carbon dioxide can be kept under a safety line as long as emmissions from coal are evenly dispersed globally. Seeing Trough The Skin

In: Other, Research Friday Sep 12,2008

Seeing Trough The Skin ! Now i bet that is something than never crossed your mind ! We normally see trough our eyes, and it’s the same for 99.9 % of all the animals and insects. But what if we take that 0.1 % from the nature and make it work for our cause ?

Prof. Leonid Yaroslavsky from the Tel Aviv University believes that humans may posses the ability to “see” colors and shapes with their skin. In a chapter of his book, Advances in Information Optics and Photonics, Prof Yaroslavsky presents an optic-less imaging model that could lead to a new form of optical imaging technology that beats the limitations of today’s lens-based imaging devices. His model could explain how the controversial primordial instinct works in some plants and animals and how it has evolved.

“Some people have claimed that they possess the ability to see with their skin,” says Prof. Yaroslavsky. Most of the cases, biologists dismiss this possibility, but there is probably a reasonable explanation for “seeing with the skin”. Once understood, he believes skin visions can lead new therapies for helping the blind deal better with their condition. Continue Reading…
